Today there are 86 sport schools for children, a special Olympic reserve school for children, a physical training club for children, the Altai territory Olympic reserve centre with 46 thousand students total.
The Altai territory has over 5 thousand sport facilities, including 89 stadiums, 1363 sports halls, 33 swimming pools, 93 ski depots, 189 shooting galleries where 4932 staff workers work and 2748 of them (55.7%) have higher education. During the year over 250 championships and the Altai territory cup competitions are carried out in different sports. The result of the sport institutions’ work: over 60 Altai athletes are in the national teams of the Russian Federation of different sports. Three Altai teams participate in championships of Russia (in volleyball and field hockey).
Sport life in the Altai territory has a long history. Names of some Altai sportsmen are widely known all over the world. Among them are: Trofim Lomakin, the first Olympic champion in weightlifting; Evdokiya Mekshilo, an Olympic gold medal holder in ski relay race; Pereverzev V., an Olympic silver medal holder in pair-oar rowing with a steersman; Sergei Klevchenya, an Olympic gold medal holder in speed skating, who took part in three Olympic Games; Ekaterina Lobaznyuk, a holder of three Olympic medals in artistic gymnastics;
Eryemina L., the World Champion in parachuting in 1963, in three years she became the absolute World Champion;
Elistratov V., the World Champion in 1991 and 1992 in adult sambo wrestling; Tarasov S., a Lillehammer Olympics gold, silver and bronze medal holder in biathlon.
