Altai is an agricultural territory that is why more then 90% of culture institutions are in the rural area (83% of libraries, 98% of culture clubs, 82% of museums, 70% of art schools for children). That is why rural culture has first priority.

The Altai territory has 796 municipalities. As a result a multibranch system of culture institutions has been formed.

There are 1154 libraries and 1313 culture clubs, 5 state museums, 6 video rentals institutions, 4 state and 2 municipal theatres, 2 concert institutions, 1 university with federal subordination, 5 specialized secondary schools, 118 music and art schools for children, etc.

Professional Art in the Altai territory is presented with the Altai territory Shukshin drama theatre, the state musical comedy theatre, the state children and youth theatre, the state puppet theatre \"Skazka\", the state Philharmonic of the Altai territory and the state Russian folk orchestra “Sibir”.

Each year theatres and art groups carry out about 500 cultural events in the cities and districts of the Altai territory.

Great contribution to cultural life of the Altai territory is made by unions and societies – the Altai territory organization of the theatre people Union, the Altai territory organization of the Russian artist Union, the Altai territory writer organization, the Altai territory musical society.

Historical legacy of the Altai territory is a unique part of Russian culture. The Altai takes care about 5059 monuments of history and culture. The first place in Siberia is taken by Altai in the number of historical and culture monuments.

The Altai museum system is multibranch – there 5 state museums here and 66 municipal museums. The Altai territory is the leading territory in Siberia in the number of museums. Total number of museum books in Altai equals 500 thousand books.

Altai is in the ten leading territories of Russia in the population coverage with cinema service: 6 film distributors with the collection of 8025 movies, 446 film projector units.

Art education system is represented by 118 art schools and music schools for children, 5 training college (3 music training colleges, 1 college of culture and 1 art training college), the Altai State Academy of Culture and Science.

The Altai territory culture department carries out systematic support work for talented children. This work is presented with different competitions and festivals; the major of them is “Young Altai Genius”. Competition winners get grants of different kinds.

One of important areas of the Altai territory culture department is support of outstanding art and culture people. Since 1998 the law \"About awards in the field of literature, art, architecture and folk art\" has been active, according to which outstanding people in the field of literature, art, architecture and folk art are given awards twice a year.

The work in revival and protection the traditional folk Altai culture is carried out in the Altai territory.

A positive tendency that can be observed nowadays is changing of Altai local events into events of Siberia importance.
