Altai State Museum of Art

The «Barnaul Hermitage».This is a common and due term applied to a unique art collection, the only one in Altai and Siberia. The museum was opened in 1959 by the exhibition «Masterpieces of the Tretyakov Art Gallery». The first exhibits came from the Russian Museum, the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Art Gallery, the State Historical Museum, Research museum of the USSR Academy of Arts, the Pavlovsk memorial palace, and Altai state museums of local lore, history and economy. Presently, the museum’s collection numbers 13 thousand items of painting, graphic art, sculpture, and decorative art. It encompasses five centuries of national art culture. The museum houses paintings by Russian and Soviet artists, as well as Altai first professionals (G. Choros- Gurkin, A. Nikulin, A. Borisov) and modern painters. Pieces of decorative art are also exhibited in the museum.
